Now in its 5th year, the Picpoul Blanc has always been a crowd favorite and sells out early. With an "if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it" mindset, the 2023 harvest found us sitting and waiting for the wine to naturally do its thing. While still in Lodi, we switched vineyards to the Terra Alta vineyard owned and operated by Markus and Liz Bokisch. The vineyard is Certified organic by "California Certified Organic Farmers" (CCOF) and boasts an array of plantings. Picpoul, a late-ripening variety, is one of the last picks for us, despite being grown in the warm climate of Lodi. We brought in the fruit at 19.0 brix to maintain that eclectic acidity and lively pop. The wine was then pressed whole cluster into stainless barrels for fermentation and aging. Native primary and secondary ferments went off without a hitch. The 2023 Faux exudes a real "irreverent punk rocker" energy. It is full and plush with a giant vein of acidity followed by Yuzu, oyster shell, and lemon curd notes. We opted for full natural malolactic fermentation, giving the wine plushness but with tension.
